Bkk Storm (8) vs Vets All Stars (3)
[Tun (5), Sukrit, Nut, Cuno]
Team,
No bad for our first outing on an 11-a side pitch.
8 goals to Bangkok Storm, 3 goals to the Vets League stars.
It was a great experience playing in a downpour too! We thought we were in for an agonizingly hot afternoon so when the thunderstorm started it was such a relief although it was clear many of us were not used to playing on a wet surface (Wayne, who's a West Ham lad, seemed right at home).
We've also had some problems with the "no slide tackling" rule with a couple of our defenders getting increasingly frustrated by being limited to shoulder charges.
When the game kicked-off at past the scheduled time we had difficulty settling down and were immediately pegged back 1-0 but Sukrit's fantastic header off a corner opened the floodgates for us with Tun (5 goals), Nut (1 goal), and Cuno (1 goal) all contributing to the washout of the Vets.
I'm at a loss to choose the best goal of the match:
Tun's curled shot into the far post,
Sukrit's powerful header,
Nut's long shot that skipped under the keeper,
or Cuno's solo run up the left wing and then beating the keeper at the near post.
Maybe it was from the Vets defender who curled in his corner kick straight into the goal. That was something special!
But on a more negative note, the 8-3 scoreline flatters us.
We didn't do bad, but then we didn't do well either.
The Vets played a really fantastic game despite not winning and many times throughout the match we were aimlessly chasing the ball. They were unlucky to lose by such a huge margin.
They played the patient, mature kind of game I really want us to adopt.
I'd on to say that they actually played better than we did.
Here are some points to consider:
We easily lose our shape.
We hurry too much and resort to long balls.
We don't trust our mates enough to pass to them.
We are especially vulnerable in set pieces (corner kicks in particular... 2 of the Vets goals were from corners).
These flaws can be ironed out and WE WILL IRON THEM OUT in the up coming training sessions.
But let me tell you that this isn't going to be a quick fix. It will take months for us to learn to play together, the way we want.
Months.
If we're really lucky and we have smart people, then maybe we will start clicking as a team a couple of weeks into th new season.
So please be patient with each other and give them space to grow.
